This Week in Bacon

skitched-20080801-081758.jpgThis week’s feature is a bacon alarm clock, the cleverly named Wake n’ Bacon, that wakes you up with the smell of real cooked bacon, rather than the traditional, grating, cruel, terrible, gruesome alarm-clock sound. Geek.com splains:

Created by Matty Sallin, Daniel Bartolini, and Hsiao-huh Hsu, the Wake n’ Bacon alarm clock is different from your average variety clock in that it doesn’t use sound or harsh vibration to arouse a weary sleeper. Rather, the unit cooks a slice of bacon for you to fill your bedroom with the smell of breakfast.

The way it works is that a person puts a slice of frozen bacon into the tray of the clock before going to bed. In the morning, the alarm clock then activates ten minutes before the alarm time and turns on two halogen lamps which slowly cook the bacon. Ten minutes later you are supposed to wake with the delicious smell of cooked pork in your bedroom. If that doesn’t do the the trick, then a backup alarm sounds to wake the individual.

Wired has more. If you prefer a Strawberry Alarm Clock, well then we’ve got you covered, too.

  • What a great idea. My company may even market these. We should probably have a vegan alternative, although I don't know any vegans or what a vegan actually is.
  • This is so much better than putting a Foreman Grill at the foot of ones bed.

That's horrifying! Why would you want to manufacture an alarm clock that wakes people up with the smell of cooking vegans?!

"Why would you want to manufacture an alarm clock that wakes people up with the smell of cooking vegans?!"

Because they taste so good when they are done crispy. Meat just falls off the bone. And they taste like chicken.

So how is it not unhealthy to leave bacon sitting out at room temperature for 8 hours or so before cooking it? That's basically an invitation for food poisoning.

I love the smell of cooking vegans in the morning

Well, the original idea of bacon was to preserve meat in a way that didn't require refrigeration. So it would work just fine if the meat was actually smoked in the old-fashioned way. But with bacon the way it's made now, I don't know. I think the alarm clock needs a built-in refrigeration unit that turns off just prior to the initiation of the cooking process.

I'm not sure the bacon is supposed to be eaten. You could always cook yourself some more. It says the point is to wake you up via smell, rather than sound. It never says EAT IT.

To anyone concerned about the prospects of food poisoning: people who purchase bacon-cooking alarm clocks have bigger problems - healthwise - than room-temperature pork.

They should create and design a home alarm system looking like that. Imagine burglars actually passing by it if they have never seen one:)) You could actually order a custom made one and hide it anywhere in the house.
  • Interesting name! But what's best about it is that it calls our attention with a real bacon smell than the usual grueling sounds of other alarm devices! mmm I could almost smell the aroma of bacon from here! Yum!
