Breast Milk Update

Here’s an update on the Swiss restaurant owner who is replacing cow’s milk with breast milk in the food he serves: Apparently, he’s created a trend…

Yesterday, PETA wrote a letter to Ben & Jerry’s, urging them to replace cow’s milk with breast milk in their ice-cream:

Using cow’s milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer’s health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America’s leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow’s milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease-America’s number one cause of death.

The breast is best! Won’t you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow’s milk to breast milk in Ben & Jerry’s ice cream?

Ben & Jerry’s response?

We applaud PETA’s novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother’s milk is best used for her child.

We (Brad, co-guest blogger and I) agree . . . no thanks PETA. It seems like PETA is devaluing their own mission here by making ludicrous requests — do they really expect Ben & Jerry’s to go around the country gathering breast milk from lactating women? Cows are better suited for the job and it’s definitely cheaper. Plus, breast milk tastes best from the teat, which is why it’s for babies. So, let’s keep it that way.

  • Replacing cow's milk wit breast milk doesn't seems realistic from monetary as well as practical point.Obviously breast milk is good for health but only for children.
  • Interesting article, I never knew that Cow's milk is harmful. I'm wondering on where to get all those breast milk they needed for the ice cream?

    That is gross, Winn!
Actually, Patrick and I had a funny conversation about "mom farms." But it was more in the context of sending breast milk to orphans and whatnot. Not for normal consumption

BUT HELLO!!! How could anyone not mention it---?!? BEN AND JERRY'S BROUGHT BACK CHUBBY HUBBYYYYYY!! The most amazing combo of peanutbutter-filled, chocolate-covered pretzels is back! I drool thinking about the pint of breast-milk-free ice cream in my freezer and and know that I am only one lactaid (not lactate) pill away from yumm-o goodness.

I'm getting ready to open a nice breast milk plant in Cambodia. I bet we can feed them hormones to keep them lactating. Hell, maybe we can give hormones to young girls to get them started early. Anyone want in on the ground level? This could be big bucks...
