Lebanon to Sue Israel in Hopes of Claiming Ownership over the Falafel

Peace in the Middle East might take a little longer than expected. Apparently, a Lebanese trade union plans to sue Israel in international courts for attempting to claim ownership over certain traditional Lebanese foods, such as the falafel, tabbouleh, and hummus. Fady Abboud, the president of the Association of Lebanese Industrialists explains,

“The Israelis are marketing our main food dishes as if they were Israeli dishes.”

[Abboud] said his union is trying to register Lebanese foods and ingredients with the government in Beirut “so it can appeal to the international courts against Israel.”

By registering Lebanese foods and ingredients, “we are preventing Israel from stealing our main food trademarks and selling them around the world.”

Who knows what will happen . . . Six years ago, Greece managed to convince the EU to protect Greek feta cheese in the Community’s catalogue of Protected Designated Origin names, which recognizes products such as Roquefort and Parma Ham.

What next . . . Italians claiming pizza?
