Ted Haffenreffer, R.I.P.

skitched-20090115-133450.jpgThe first man to make me puke from drinking booze is dead. Boston-bred Ted Haffenreffer, who operated the eponymous brewery that churned out Private Stock malt liquor, was 91.

It was July 4, 1989, on West Beach in Beverly Farms, Mass., when I drank several tepid bottles of Private Stock, known affectionately as Green Death.

There was darkness. There were fireworks. The rest, as they say, was upheaval after upheaval.

Whimsical history of Hafenreffer, complete with photoshopped Sean Connery malt-liquor swigging still, here. More here.

Just for kicks, watch a true attic-dwelling Boston connasewah burp down a forty.

Thanks to my friend Dude, who was nearby and also sick as a dog on that July day in 1989, for the tip.

Insightful read. I have stumbled and twittered this for my friends. Others no doubt will like it like I did.
