Friday Food Song(s): Songs for Ice Cream Trucks

Songs for Ice Cream Trucks

I grew up in the hinterlands.  For very sound economic reasons, the hinterlands do not have ice cream trucks. I have never  bought an ice cream from an ice cream truck. But even I know that the ice cream truck is an iconic part of American Society to which many people have a Pavlovian reaction.  Upon hearing a tinny, chiming rendition of “Turkey in the Straw”, they leap drooling to attention and start fishing for change.  This album is for them.

Friday Food Song: I Scream, You Scream…

July is National Ice Cream Month, so you had to know it was going to happen….The hotsy-totsy classic of the 1920’s racoon-coat wearing college sound as encapsulated in a  1929 performance by Waring’s Pennsylvanians: “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream!”

Waring’s Pennsylvanians were not the originators of the song, but band co-leader Fred Waring has, of course, his own food tie, so it seemed appropriate to let them rip.  Word has it the Big Blender’s brother and band co-leader Tom is the one with the Popeye voice.  It’s the berries!

Friday Food Song: Liquor is Quicker, but Candy IS Dandy.

I just found out that whoever declares these things has declared June as National Candy Month. It’s a pity that I just found this out, because I could have a lot to say on the topic of candy….so perhaps it’s a blessing that I just found out.

Either way, it does mean I could choose one and only one candy song for this last Friday in June. Boldly ignoring the obvious, I give you the second most obvious–a lyric of joy from the time before excise taxes when candy was fun and made you so happy that your hair curled.

Friday Food (Drink) Song: Ei! Wie schmeckt der Coffee süße!

Give it up for Papa Bach and Ei! Wie schmeckt der Coffee süße! from the Coffee Cantata.

Ei!  wie schmeckt der coffee süsse,
lieblicher als tausend Küsse,
milder als Muskatwein.

Coffee, Coffee, muss ich haben,
und wenn jemand mich will laben,
ach, so schenkt mir coffee ein!

My rough translation (It’s been a lot of years since I last studied German):

Ah! How sweet coffee tastes,

sweeter than a thousand kisses,

milder than Muscatel.

Coffee, coffee, I must have,

And if someone wants to refresh me,

Well, he must pour me coffee!

Friday Food Song: Drink! Drink! Drink!

I have been busy baking in the Viennese style for a Fasching party, so my offering for the Friday food song is a song that has the Fasching spirit: The Student’s Drinking Song from Sigmund Romberg’s The Student Prince as sung, but not acted, by Mario Lanza.

Yes, I know. The Student Prince is set in Heidelberg, but the music is clearly Austrian in spirit and sound. After all, Romberg was born in the Austro-Hungarian empire (the Hungarian part), served in the army, and studied engineering and music in Vienna before moving to the United States in 1909. A song about drinking written for Germanic students by a Jewish Hungarian engineer and sung by an Italian–yep, that about sums up the Austro-Hungarian empire

Let’s drink!

Friday’s Food Song

In tribute to Kyle McKenzie’s very interesting podcast with Pierre Desrochers on the topic of food miles, I give you one of the great hits of the Roaring Twenties, as interpreted by the comic stylings of Marvin Suggs and the All Food Glee Club.
